This second part of the trip involved travel from Perth to Broome, up to Cape Leveque north of Broome, through the Kimberleys including the Gibb River Road, Bungle Bungles and Ord River and then onto the Red Centre covering Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon, Palm Valley and the West and East McDonnells. I then proceeded to North Queensland (Cairns and surrounds) to spend time with my daughter and family with a quick side trip to the Daintree World Heritage area. At end July, I finally made my way back to Brisbane arriving home on 2 August after 4.5 months away and a travel distance of 22600km.
Once again I enjoyed seeing and experiencing the wide open spaces of Australia and the wonderment of an ancient, dry land with its many gorges, dry river beds and red earthy colours. As on my first trip round Australia, the Bungle Bungle Range was the highlight of the trip. The Bungle Bungle Range with its “beehive” domes is a most unusual formation while the hike up the Picanniny Gorge was an awe inspiring experience. Kata Tjuta Range and the walk up Mount Sonder in the West MacDonells followed closely after the Bungle Bungles with wonderful views of the heart of Australia. Every Australian and anyone with a sense of adventure should visit the Kimberleys and the Red Centre of Australia at least once in a lifetime.
